Why I Built This
From Doug Walters — Founder, Tipity Hope Ministries
I've been through it all. Four 6-month Salvation Army programs. Multiple detox facilities. Several 90-day rehabs. I was a big-time sponsor in AA. I did everything they told me to do, and nothing stuck — because every one of those programs had the same problem: I'd leave sober, but sober was all I had. No job. No money. No plan. Just clean blood and an empty wallet, and the world would hit me like a freight train.
Then I found JADA Ministries in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, and everything changed. JADA made you work — not as punishment, but as part of the recovery. I got a job. I caught up on my bills. I saved money. And when I walked out after 6 months, I didn't just have sobriety — I had a life.
While I was at JADA, I was introduced to Emerald Coast Church. Pastor Tim didn't care about how bad my past was — he told me how good my future could be. He showed me that church wasn't what I thought it was. He always said the best is yet to come. And the whole ECC family — Pastor Mike, Pastor Adam, and the entire congregation — welcomed me like I'd been there my whole life. Between JADA giving me structure and ECC giving me a spiritual home, I finally had the foundation I'd been missing every other time.
That's what Tipity Hope Ministries is. I'm building what worked for me — a program where people come in after detox, get on their feet fast, work real jobs, attend faith-based classes rooted in the Full Armor of God, and leave in 6 months set up for life. Not just sober. Set up.
I'm bringing this to Central Pennsylvania because I know firsthand that the state will hold you in jail or prison until you have somewhere to go. I've seen good people sit behind bars not because they're dangerous, but because they don't have an address to parole to. Tipity Hope will be that place — not just a bed, but a program, a job, and a future.
This isn't the 12 steps. This is 10 spiritual principles from Ephesians 6:10-18. Real work, real community, real accountability, and a real shot at the life you were meant to live.
I have to thank my dad. He never gave up on me. When I couldn't see anything worth saving in myself, he saw it. Every program I failed, every phone call I didn't deserve, every time I gave him a reason to walk away — he stayed. I didn't understand it then, but I understand it now: God was answering his prayers the whole time. Even when I was at my worst, someone was on their knees asking God to save me. And He did.
To every family member, friend, or loved one reading this — don't count that person out. Even when they can't see it, even when they're at the end of the road, your prayers are working. God hears you. I am living proof that even after every program fails, the right one can change everything. There is hope.
